Voice of Baceprot (or VoB) are an all-girl rockband from West-Java, Indonesia, consisting of a
young hijab-wearing trio on vocals, guitar, bass and drums. The word baceprot comes from the
Sundanese language meaning ‘noisy’, and represents the music they play.
VoB began to turn heads when a video of the band performing a cover of Rage Against The
Machine in 2015 became popular on Youtube. The trio continued to produce videos of them
covering songs by their idols, including Red Hot Chili Peppers, Metallica and Slipknot, which
garnered even more attention.
Besides their obvious musical talent and young age, it was also the unique and paradoxical
combination of heavy rock/metal and their wearing of the hijab that caught the eye of media across
the globe. “Wearing a hijab has not been a hindrance for us so far […]. We are free to express our
creativity through rock music, while also fulfilling our responsibilities as Muslims” says frontwoman
VoB quickly went viral. The group was invited backstage by Slash when Guns ‘N Roses performed
in Jakarta in 2018. Further proof of their rising reputation came via personal shout-outs from their
idols Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello and Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flee on
social media, along with Living Colour guitarist Vernon Reid.
“The three girls are challenging entrenched stereotypes about gender and religious norms in the
world’s most-populous Muslim-majority nation.” (Joe Cochrane, New York Times)
” (VoB) have achieved acclaim throughout Java (…), reward for the dedication of the bandmembers
who every day after school diligently practised their thrash metal riffs and brainstormed original
lyrics.” (Kate Lamb, The Guardian)
