Hàng Lâm Trang Anh, known by her stage name Suboi (pronounced Sueboy) is a Vietnamese Hip Hop artist, songwriter and actress, born and raised in the Vietnamese metropolis of Saigon. The twenty-six year old rapper has been dubbed “Queen of Hip Hop” in Vietnam, as she is the first young woman who has made it as a rapper in Vietnam. It’s a brave career choice considering the repressive state of Vietnam where censorship is the norm. Suboi, known for her introspective lyrics, infectious energy and a versatile flow, she deals in her music with subjects like family, love, social pressures and daily life in Vietnam. However, she has to use metaphors when addressing a delicate point, making sure not to annoy the authorities with her lyrics.

Inspired as a child by The Eminem Show, she says she’s influenced by artists such as Snoop Dogg, Linkin Park, Aaliyah, Kendrick Lamar, Mos Def, and of course Eminem. Her Hip Hop music thus contains the energy and rage in which she expresses herself. Because she raps fluently in English and Vietnamese and her samples contain sounds and beats of the original music of Vietnam, her Hip Hop music is original and anchored to Vietnam.

At the age of 20 she released her first album Walk, which was well received by her local fan base and music critics in Vietnam. After leaving her record label Music Faces in 2012, she set up her own label Suboi Entertainment and released her second album Run in 2014. With these two albums, Suboi has now over 700,000 fans on her Facebook page, gets tens of thousands of views on YouTube, and appears in advertisements for Adidas and Samsung.

In the meantime she did a tour through Russia and Japan but due to a declined visa she was unable to perform at Caamfest 2014. In 2015 she made her debut tour in the U.S. This time she did perform at Caamfest, and a few days later she took SXSW by storm. She was even invited back by SXSW to perform again in 2016 for a few shows including opening for Skrillex.
