Mário Lúcio is one of the most influential figures of the music and cultural scene in Cape Verde. He is a singer-songwriter and one of the country’s foremost and leading composers of all times.
Lúcio started his musical career leading the band Simentera. His permanent research and perfection of Cabo Verde’s traditional music has given the country’s sound a fresh air of modernity, poetry and originality, which is evident in the 9 albums he has released since 1995. In his compositions, he focusses on Cape Verde’s leading music styles such as Morna, Funaná, Batuque, and Coladeira. Mário Lúcio’s signature songs and arrangements are found in an array of albums and songs. Most of these were interpreted and recorded by the late Cesaria Evora as well as by the country’s emerging and established singers and by artists as far afield as Brazil, France and Italy.
Besides his musical career, Mario Lucio has a degree in Law and was a Deputy in the Cape Verdean parliament from 1996 to 2001. From 2011 to 2016, he served as the county’s Secretary of Culture and Arts.
Mário Lúcio has returned to the stage and currently tours as a solo artist. His latest album Funanight was released in 2017.
