Fumaça Preta (Black Smoke) bring together elements of tropicalia, psychedelic rock, fuzz funk, musique concrete, acid house, radiophonic electronics and afrobeat.
The trio started as a studio experiment when Alex Figueira, a Portuguese-Venezuelan producer and percussionist, invited some old friends to join him in the tiny analogue studio he built on the back of his house in Amsterdam for some free-ride unpretentious experimentation.
Stuart Carter, producer and guitarist with UK’s psych-funk band The Grits and James Porch, bassist and shouter for The Grits were invited for that first session. The songs that were conceived, recorded to tape and mixed in that 3-day session became the band’s first 45, released on Music With Soul Records.
From then on, they met regularly in Amsterdam to fuel the fire, each time squeezing more and more twists and turns into each track, producing another 45RPM record.
In September 2014 their début album was released on the famous Soundway Records. Live the band becomes a quintet that swerves in and out of endless musical avenues but never loses the rock solid afro/Venezuelan psychedelic groove that drives them.
